Not the Brightest Bulb in the Chandelier

Ray
The lights are on, but nobody’s home.

Our orange cat, Rayo, is sweet.  And handsome.

And dim.

The following scenario has happened THREE times…

Greg’s black stuffed animal dog ends up on the floor.  Ray sees it motionless.  He circles the dog, moaning the most horrible mourning meow you’ve ever heard.  Then he lays next to the dog, continuing to howl until someone picks it up.

Why, you ask?

Because he thinks it is our black cat, Mushu.  And he thinks he is dead.

Ray and the stuffed dog

That’s right, he can’t tell the difference between a stuffed dog and a real cat (who he has lived with for 3 years).

We named him Rayo for “rayo de sol” which means ray of sunshine in Spanish.

Unfortunately, it is always a bit cloudy in his world.

On second thought, maybe I can understand the confusion…

mushu on back

We do love our “Cloudy with a Chance of Rayo” cat.

  1. Awww, that is too cute that your cat thinks the black stuffed dog is his buddy, animals are funny like that mixing things up. My husband swears we keep this stuffed penguin for a stuffed animal for our bunny, I think it is more for him than anything!

  2. Aww that is sad and precious all the same time. I’ve heard of cats living together for a while then when one of them dies the other one stops eating and stuff. I’m glad your cat hasn’t started that! I’d keep this little dog around a lot more.

  3. So funny! What do you think he’d do if he saw the real cat and the stuffed animal next to each other? It may blow his mind!

  4. Oh my gosh, this is hilarious. We had a “dim” cat too (just had her put to rest about a month ago, she was 17). She was a beautiful Calico and we would often say that where she lacked in brains, she made up for in beauty. Man, she was dumb, but she was sweet. Thanks for this story!

  5. Oh-My-Gosh I love that your cat Rayo does this. It really makes him special and it is kind of hysterical. Sending some kitty love.

  6. hahahahaha that’s hilarious. I LOVE the Monty Python reference! “Could you come back? I FEEL HAPPY!” hahaha do you read the blog “Snarkfest”? She has a cat they nicknamed Dumbass and one of her blog post is random stuff Dumbass has done, including get himself TRAPPED INSIDE THE REFRIGERATOR all day while she was at work! Cray cray.

  7. I love the which is smarter cats or dogs thing……..to me it is like saying who is smarter your son or your daughter? There may be no correct answer, but in our heart, well, we know cats don’t take no crap.

  8. A little dumb, but a whole lot of sweet. 🙂 It’s always nice when a pet branches out from licking him/herself.

  9. My cat Faletame just said, “Damn, how stupid can one cat be? Oh, btw Rich, I’ve killed all those toy mice you brought home. Think you might stop by the store and buy me some more!” Cats are strange animals, but what would we do without them? (Well, we wouldn’t have to feed, water, give attention, stop from scratching furniture, clean litter boxes, etc.) Hmmmm … why DO we own cats, anyway?
